Family Owned

Three generations of the Huber family have considered Hogback Mountain their home, celebrating some of their most cherished memories on the property. With a commitment to hospitality and the rich agrarian traditions of Western Loudoun, the Huber family hoped to share the beautiful views and property with others to enjoy their big life moments and preserve the land’s agricultural beauty.

Wine connoisseurs prior to entering the industry, Mike & Kristi Huber’s dedication to quality implored them to bring in top consultants in the industry to analyze the terroir of their 300 acre estate, driving us to plant classic vitis vinifera varietals. What our land is capable of producing is a beautiful blend of new and old world styles; complex, age-worthy wines that tell a story, stories that deserve to be shared. For the Hubers and the STW team, producing world class wines handcrafted from our estate vines is the ultimate goal.

Virginia Soils

The greatest wines in the world all have one thing in common: a focus on the terroir that sources the world class wines. Great winemaking begins in the vineyards, and with the challenges posed by Virginia’s climate, mountain vineyard sites have proven to be resilient in the region’s high rainfall and humidity thanks to their well-drained soils, undulating topography, and improved airflow. With our estate vines located atop Hogback Mountain, our vineyard’s unique meso-climate possesses all three of these characteristics. The soils are comprised of two ancient geologies (Catoctin Channery Silt Loam and Meyersville-Catocin Complex), which contain weathered greenstone schist that provides great drainage and permeability in our soils. Combined with steep slopes and constant airflow, these soils give our vines the ‘struggle’ necessary to produce concentrated, intensely flavored grapes for our premium estate wines. With the estate label, everything has been thought about, designed, and treated with a single pursuit in mind: to produce the greatest possible bottle of wine.

Virginia History

Virginia is the first recorded wine growing region in the United States. Beginning with the Jamestown settlement in 1607, the state has been growing grapes and making wine for over 400 years! Throughout the centuries, the state’s viticulturists have experienced myriad trials and tribulations (e.g., indigenous pests/diseases, wars, prohibition, etc.), but despite those setbacks, the industriousness and pursuit of excellence of Virginia winegrowers has led to a continuous growth of the industry (in scope and quality!). By improving vineyard site selection and refining its viticultural and winemaking techniques, the modern Virginia wine industry is the most capable of realizing Thomas Jefferson’s dream of producing World Class wine from this great state. With top names in the industry (Fred Dame MS, Steven Spurrier) comparing modern Virginia to Napa in the 70s, there is no doubt forefront of the next revolution in Virginia wine!
